Penrith is an historic market town just north of the River Eamont about 18 miles south of Carlisle and about four miles northeast of Ullswater. The ruins of Penrith Castle can still be seen as can those of Brougham Castle to the southeast of the town. Today Penrith is a popular tourist destination as it is well placed for the Lake District and the Eden Valley and continues to serve the local area with market days on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
In the graveyard of St Andrews Church are two ancient monuments the most famous of which is the 'Giants Grave' which is is thought to be where Owen Caesarius, King of Cumbria in the early 10th century was buried. Also in the churchyard is a Saxon 'wheel' cross dated to the same period.
