Cockermouth is a small old town - spelt Cokyrmouth in the 12th century, standing on the Rivers Derwent and Cocker to the northwest of the Lake District. Its name comes from 'mouth of the River Cocker'. A 12th century castle has a preserved dungeon and there is a Norman church. The town has several attractive buildings and an 18th century house in Main Street is where Wordsworth was born in 1770.
