Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Barrow-in-Furness
Barrow-in-Furness is situated at the southern end of the Furness peninsula and was for many years a small village in the lee of Furness Abbey. The monks smelted iron with wood in the 13th century and by the mid 19th century it had become a large industrial town with Furness Railway transporting iron ore and slate from local mines to the coast. The town eventually had the world's largest steelworks and remains a naval shipyard. The impressive town hall was opened in 1987 and has some dazzling stained glass in the Queen's Hall.
