Waltham was an old Saxon village mentioned in Domesday and lies about four miles south of Grimbsy which had a church, a mill and a Customs ferry. The church of St James was originally built in the early 12th century. Grimsby is a large and famous fishing port and has a long covered arcade with a fish auction each morning. The fishing fleet has gradually declined but the port remains an important commercial centre for Danish imports. Most of the town is Victorian with the exception of the Dock Tower. The folly was built in the style of the medieval tower of the Palazzo Publico in Sienna and is a landmark for miles out to sea.
