Goole : Goole was developed in the early 19th century at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Don and on the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal. Work began in the 17th century to divert the River Don northwards to the River Ouse. This made the lower Don navigable for small barges so that coal from South Yorkshire could be transported to Goole at the new mouth of the Don for onward shipment.
