Stapleford was mentioned in Domesday and had a church. The present St Helen's Church dates from the 13th century but has a 10 foot high Saxon cross. The town developed through its access to the River Trent and became a centre for the wool trade and later expanded with the hoisery industry. The town lies about six miles west of Nottingham.
