Newburn is situated on the north bank of the Tyne about five miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, once the county town of Northumberland about 70 miles north of York. The city became an important regional centre in the early middle ages and responsible for the defence of the northeast from marauding Scots. As early as the 13th century coal was being taken to London but it was not until the 19th century that major expansion came with the development of heavy engineering. Today it is a vibrant city and was a leading candidate to become European City of Culture in 2008.
Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service.
