Killingworth is about five miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and about the same distance west of Tynemouth. The town came into existance in the late 19th century when it was built next to the old village of Killingworth. Killingworth Colliery was well known. Much of the new town buildings were later demolished and Killingworth, with its new housing estates, is now really a commuter town for Newcastle and other nearby centres.
