Sunderland lies on the coast about 11 miles southeast of Newcastle-upon-Tyne at the mouth of the River Wear. Originally part of County Durham the small village of Sunderland was granted a charter in the 12th century. The town developed throughout the middle ages and by the 19th century had expanded to include the settlements of Monkwearmouth and Bishopwearmouth.
