Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Shoreham-by-Sea
Shoreham-by-Sea : Shoreham-by-Sea is a small town and port on the south coast about six miles west of Brighton. It lies on the River Adur and is part of the ribbon of urban development along the south coast between Brighton and Worthing. Old Shoreham dates back to Roman times and the church of St Nicholas is in part of Anglo-Saxon origin.
The new town was laid out in a grid pattern in the early 11th century. It became a busy port in the later Middle Ages and the rise of Brighton and the arrival of the railways ensured its position as a Victorian seaport. The harbour remains a commercial operation today. Shoreham has the largest Farmers Market in Sussex and its own airfield serving as Brighton's municipal airport. It is also reputed to have one of the oldest secular buildngs in Europe still in use. The Marilipins Museum is housed in an early 12th century building in the High Street.
