Petworth is mentioned in Domesday as Peteorde and had a church and a mill. It is an attractive old town with many fine 16th and 17th century houses including a stately 17th century mansion, originally a manor house, converted into a castle by the Percy family in the early 14th century. The boundary walls of the great park in which the house stands were landscaped by Capability Brown and extend into the town itself. Petworth Park is host to the well-known annual Antiques and Fine Art Fair. The town has a variety of shops and an attractive centre with speciality shops as well as supermarkets.
