Swanage is an old market town on the south-east coast of Dorset sheltered by the chalk headland known as Ballard Down. This is now owned by the National Trust and is largely grassland. Swanage became prosperous in the 19th century when it became an important port exporting Purbeck stone. Today it is a popular tourist resort with amusement arcades, cafes, bars and restaurants.
