Christchurch or Thuinam as it was called in the Domesday Book was a small market town and today retains all its original beauty standing comfortably between the Rivers Avon and Stour. The magnificent Priory was built by William II in the 11th century. Smuggling naturally became a popular business in the 18th century and today there are attractive walks down to the Quay and harbour.
The town is the smallest district in Dorset with a population less than 50,000. The surrounding villages of Mudeford and Highcliffe and the parishes of Burton, Winkton and Hurn form the local borough. There are ample local beaches and sea views and lovely country walks with the New Forest nearby.
