Oakham was mentioned as Ocheham in Domesday and was the capital of Rutland when it was still a county. Oakham Castle is a large stone structure still standing today and has a Norman banqueting hall with a collection of horse shoes nailed to the wall. The original Norman Lord of the Manor came from Ferrieres in Normandy well known for its iron making industry. The grammar school was founded in the 16th century and there are many fine old buildings in the town including Hayne House and Flore's House.
