Mountsorrel is a large village about seven miles north of Leicester on the River Soar. The old Norman castle was destroyed in the 13th century by forces loyal to the King and all that remains is a granite crag on Castle Hill. The Butter Market was built in the late 18th century and the village expanded in the 19th century with Mountsorrel market attracting merchants to visit with demand for local gloves. The Soar Valley Leisure Centre is located in the village as is the largest quarry in Europe. In the 19th century a hospital was built to care for those made ill through all the dust. The Mountsorrel and Rothley Community Heritage centre runs steam trains from its station on Bond Lane.
