Measham was mentioned in Domesday as Messeham and belonged to the King. It is a large village with a number of shops lying close to the Derbyshire border in an area where the The National Forest is being promoted. In the medieval ages it was largely a farming community with coal mining known in the 13th century and increasing in importance over the following centuries. Measham pottery was also a successful local industry and an example can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In the 19th century the village further prospered with the coming of the Ashby Canal and the growth of the local brickworks.
