Earl Shilton was mentioned in Domesday as Sceltone and had a mill. It lies about ten miles southeast of Leicester in an area long settled and not far from the intersection of the Fosseway with Watling Street. The castle at Earl Shilton lasted for little more than 30 or 40 years before being razed to the ground in the 12th century. For much of the medieval ages the village remained a small farming community but by the 18th century village had expanded with frame-work knitters and the hosiery industry. Today it is one of the largest village in the country.
