Barwell is mentioned in Domesday as Barewelle changing to Borewell and then later to Barwell. The town is situated to the north-west of Hinckley and there is evidence of early settlement but for much of the middle ages remained a small farming community. The village then expanded in the 19th century to become a major centre for shoe production. Today the town has good shopping and sporting facilities with a purpose-built sports centre located off Dovecot Way to the south of the town.
