Welford-on-Avon was mentioned in Domesday as Welleford and originally was part of Gloucestershire belonging to the Earl of Gloucester. The village sits in a bend of the Avon and has many old buildings with attractive thatched timber-framed cottages dating from the 17th century. There are several local shops and the village has one of the tallest maypoles in the country.
