Atherstone was mentioned in Domesday as Aderestone with ten sticks of eels and belonged to Countess Godiva. It is on Watling Street about seven miles from Tamworth and derives its name from 'Aethelred's farmstead'. Today there are several eighteenth century houses in amongst the shops and Atherstone also has a station with fast trains to London (Euston) taking about an hour and twenty minutes. There are several golf course nearby and Richard III lost his crown about six miles away.
