Whitchurch is mentioned in Domesday as having three enclosed hunting woods and the countryside remained heavily wooded throughout the Middle Ages. The town is close to the border with Cheshire and the Welsh Hills. Speed in his Tudor Atlas thought Cheshire to have an even climate and seems to have taken for granted Shropshire's reputation as being fairly cold.
The town has some old houses including Higginsons's almshouses founded in 1647 and some fine Georgian buildings. There is a good train service to Shrewsbury, Nantwich and Crewe with onward connections to Greater Manchester or the West Midlands.
