Telford is named after Thomas Telford, the famous 18th century engineer and former county surveyor of Shropshire. The town came into existence through its 'new town' status and merger with several other smaller towns nearby. The Shopping Centre was built at the new towns central location. The River Severn skirts its southern boundary and Telford now includes Ironbridge Gorge a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many trees and shrubs have been planted to secure the new identity.
