Oswestry: Oswestry is an old market border town and St Oswald was killed near here by Penda of Mercia in 642. For a long time it was a disputed area and remains of Offa's Dyke can still be seen to the west of the town. It is mentioned in Domesday as having a church and castle built by Rainald the Sherriff below the remains of the huge Iron Age hill-fort.
Today Oswestry remains an attractive market town famous for the Croeswylan Stone set up in 1559 to commemorate a local plague. There are many seventeenth century houses including the Llwyd Mansion with its double headed eagle crest granted by the Holy Roman Emperor to the Lloyds of Trenewydd for outstanding service in the Crusades.
