Ellesmere is a small market town mentioned in Domesday as having a mill and is close to several meres the nearest of which extends to over 100 acres and is a popular recreational facility. The town has many attractive half-timbered houses and Georgian properties and a parish church with an unusual wooden chancel roof in the Oteley chapel. The Shropshire Union Canal runs just to the south of the town.
