Rochdale is an old market town at the foothills of the Pennines on the River Roch and about ten miles northeast of Manchester. The town was once part of Lancashire and is mentioned in Domesday as Recedham Manor and was granted its first charter in the 13th century holding weekly markets. The town became prosperous in the 17th and 18th centuries through its association with the wool trade and rose to prominence in the 19th century.
