Oldham is an old settlement first recorded in the 9th century when the Danes settled in and around Manchester. The town lies between the rivers Irk and Medlock in the Pennines about nine miles southeast of Rochdale. For many years Oldham was part of Lancashire and relatively unknown but in the late 18th century it became a cotton spinning town and the imposing town hall is a copy of the Temple of Ceres, near Athens in Greece. It soon became an important centre for the cotton and textile industry and a major industrial town well into the 20th century.
