Wheathampstead is an attractive old market town first mentioned in Domesday Book as having four mills on the River Lea; the most important, though one of many, rivers rising in this part of Hertfordshire. The area was famed for its cattle sent to market at Smithfields. Today the town has a good range of shops catering for every day needs and sports and leisure facilities. Nearby there are many places of interest including Knebworth House, Hatfield House and Welwyn Roman Baths.
