Sawbridgeworth was known as Sabrixeworde in Domesday and had a mill. Great St Marys Church is built on the site of a former church and dates from the 13th century. It has one of the finest collections of church monuments in the country and is popular for brass rubbing due to the various monuments and brasses in both the decorated and perpendicular styles. Today it has a good range of shops and several Georgian houses in the high street testifying to its past prosperity.
