Northchurch is an old settlement to the north of Berkhamsted with Roman remains having been found on Akeman Street, the original Roman road from London to Chester. The Saxons then came and by the time the Normans arrived the parish was known as Berkhamsted St Mary later becoming the 'North Church'. Berkhamsted evolved to the south away from its original site following the building of Berkhamsted castle.
