Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Bishop's Stortford
Bishop's Stortford is mentioned in Domseday as Storteford with two mills and belonged to the Bishop of London. It lies on the River Stort about seven miles north of Harlow and probably derives its name from 'ford by the tonques of land'. For many years the town was the main market centre for the area and then expanded with the opening up of the River Stort which became navigable in the 19th century.
The town is close to the county border with Essex and as it was on the main coach route from Cambridge to London there are many old coaching inns in the town, notably the Black Lion and the Boar's Head.
