Dronfield was mentioned in Domesday as Dranefield and belonged to the King. It remained a village for much of the middle ages expanding in the 16th century with the wool industry but suffering in the 17th century civil wars when the townspeople complained to their bishop in 1643 that they had not heard a sermon for a year or received the sacrament for ten years. Close to the Pennines and situated on the River Drone the town prospered with the coal, lead and steel industries and today has a good range of shops and facilities.
