Alfreton is mentioned in Domesday as Elstretune and it is thought its name may derive from King Alfred. As with many other villages Alfreton was predominately a farming community for much of the medieval ages until the 18th century when it became the main source of coal in the county. The last pits were closed in the 20th century. Today the town has a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants and the golf course lies to the west of the town.
