Stroud is an old cloth town on the River Frome and derived its name from 'marshy ground overgrown with brushwood'. Several eighteenth century mills still exist though most have now been converted to flats. The sixteenth century town hall has been restored and the town centre has a good range of shops and restaurants. The town's museum is situated in Lansdown and the annual Festival of Religious Drama and the Arts takes place in October.
