Hardwicke was mentioned in Domesday in Herdeuuic and belonged to Westminster Abbey. It's name is thought to derive from 'herd' and 'farm' and lies close to the River Severn about four miles south of Gloucester. In the 18th century Hardwicke Cider was popular as well as the village cheese. St Nicholas' Church lies on the site of an 11th century chapel possibly built over an Anglo-Saxon foundation.
