Churchdown was known as Cirecsdune in Domesday and belonged to the Archbishop of York. In the sixteenth century it was known as 'Churchdon'. Its name most probably derives from 'hill' and 'church'. The village has several shops and lies to the west of the M5 almost midway between Gloucester and Cheltenham.
