Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Wallingford
Wallingford is an ancient town lying on the west bank of the River Thames between Reading and Oxford with the unspoilt countryside of the Berkshire Downs to the south west and the Chiltern Hills to the north east. It is one of the oldest Boroughs in England having been granted a Royal Charter in 1155 by Henry II. Originally settled by Bronze age and Iron Age peoples the remains of the ramparts which still surround the town are successors to the fortifications of the old British Settlement used in turn by Romans, Saxons and Normans.
There are many buildings of note in the town including the Town Hall built in 1670 and Flint House in the High Street which dates from 1550 and over-looking the river a fine Elizabethan house 'St Lucians' next to which is St Lucians Gardens. The unspoilt Thames near Wallingford is the longest lock-free stretch of the river and home to a variety of wildlife along its tree lined banks.
