Drayton is mentioned in Domesday and lies on the mainland about four miles north of Portsmouth but is now a residential area of the city. Portsmouth with its famous historic ships and dockyard, is where the Royal Navy has been based for more than 500 years. There are numerous museums and places to see as the area is rich in history. Southsea Castle is now a military museum and was originally built in the sixteenth century. Nearby is the D-Day museum and towards Hayling Island the Royal Marines Museum formerly Eastney Barracks. At Southsea there is a shingle beach which has long been a favourite with holiday makers.
