Chipping Norton was mentioned in Domesday as Nortone meaning 'north village' and 'ceping' meaning a market. At the time it had three mills and until the late twentieth century it was still making tweed with the Victorian Mill the largest building below the town. Bliss Mill has now been converted into private apartments with leisure facilities.
At over 200 metres Chipping Norton is the highest town in the county and the many attractive honey-coloured stone buildings from the middle ages testify to its prosperity from the wool industry. The high street has a good selection of shops with several inns and restaurants.
