Childrey is a village two and a half miles west of Wantage on the southern Berkshire Downs. The area has long been settled with Bronge Age barrows being found nearby and the village is mentioned in Domesday as Celrea. Wantage is famous for being the birthplace of Alfred the Great is also mentioned in Domesday - known as Wanetinz and had a mill. At that time it was in Berkshire. Its name comes from 'place by the fluctuating stream'.
