Banbury is the nearest town to Tadmarton in this north-eastern section of the Cotswolds and nothing now remains of the old cross mentioned in the nursery rhyme. The present Banbury Cross is a 19th century replica of one destroyed by Puritans in 1602. Elizabeth I, Lady Godiva and a member of the Fiennes family from nearby Broughton Castle have been variously identified as the ‘fine lady‘ in the ‘ride‘ of the nursery rhyme. A wide range of leisure activities can be found close by including Tadmarton Heath Golf Club and Broughton Castle featured in 'Shakespeare in Love' is excellent for cultural parties.
