Isleworth is thought to derive its name from 'Gislhere's enclosed settlement'. It lies to the north of Twickenham and to the west of Richmond on the left bank of the Thames and expanded considerably in the 20th century. There are several fine Georgian houses in the area including Syon House which was founded as a monastery in the 15th century. It contains some of Robert Adam's finest interior work.
