Cookley was an old village and lay on the opposite side of the River Stour to the present village.The new village developed near Cookley Forge not far from Caunsell in the early 19th century. The original corn mill was replaced in the early 17th century with a slitting mill and the forge was added later and work continued through the 19th century until it was finally closed. The present village with its shops started as houses built for the workforce at the forge.
