Wickersley was mentioned in Domesday as Wircresleia and is a large village about three miles east of Rotherham just north of the M1 where it merges with the M18. Rotherham is situated in the Don valley and was mentioned as Rodreham in Domesday and had a church. The church today dates from the 15th century as does a chapel on a bridge over the Don. The town's museum has 19th century furniture and effects and is housed in a late 18th century mansion. The fort at Scholeswood nearby is thought to be prehistoric.
