Whitby: Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and was mentioned as Witbei in Domesday. The famous council of Whitby took place in 664 and the 7th century abbey was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century. The remains of the historic 13th century abbey are situated on the cliffs and St Marys Church is partly of Norman date. A whalebone archway overlooks the town and this was presented by Norway.
