Settle was mentioned in Domesday as Setel and is situated on the River Ribble at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It is an attractive small market town with a good range of shops and a popular holiday destination with excellent walking country close to Upper Ribblesdale and the Forest of Bowland. There are many places of interest to visit nearby including Victoria Cave where fossil remains of a hippopotamus have been found. In the 19th century the town had more than 300 people employed in five mills.
