Sandal is about three miles south of Wakefield and famous for its castle overlooking the Calder Valley and from which the Duke of York sallied forth to loose his head. Wakefield was once the centre of the clothing trade and the many Georgian houses reflect the town's prosperity in the 18th century. The 13th century cathedral has the tallest spire in Yorkshire and over the River Calder the medieval bridge has a part 14th century chapel.
