Penistone was mentioned in Domesday as Pengestone with its name thought to refer to the high ridge on which it is set meaning height or hill. It is situated on the banks of the River Don and for much of the middle ages the town remained an agricultural community with sheep sales being conducted from the 17th century. Penistone has a Grammar school founded in the 14th century and one of the largest county shows in Yorkshire.
