Ossett is mentioned in Domesday as Osleset and had land for three plough teams and remained an agricultural community until the 14th century when coal was discovered. Coal and the textile industry provided much employment in the 19th century. The town has a good range of shops and its close proximity to the M1 has changed its old industrial profile to a modern commuter town.
