Northallerton is an ancient settlement about 28 miles north of York and lies to the east of the River Wiske with distant views of the Cleveland and Hambleton Hills. The Romans once occupied the area near 'Alfhere's farm' and in Domesday the town was known as Aluerton with the 'north' being added in the 13th century. The town has a grammar school dating from the 14th century and in the 18th century was famous for producing high-quality spurs.
