Leeds is less than four miles away and is a modern vibrant city with many attractions including the Royal Armouries Museum, the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds City Art Gallery housing major 19th-20th century British paintings. The town has a long history and in the Victorian parish church a fragment of an Anglo-Saxon cross can be seen.
Leeds really came to prominence in the late 14th century as an important textile centre with the monks of Kirkstall Abbey, about three miles to the northwest, setting the pace with their own commercial spinning and weaving interests. Further prosperity followed as the Industrial Revolution brought new industries and wealth. Headingly is about three miles from the city centre.
